Must Love Dogs Our Miss December, Christine Smith, keeps a soft spot in her heart for all creatures great and small
You don't have to be Doctor Dolittle to date Miss December, but you should be open to some ardent petting. "If a guy doesn't like animals, it won't work," says Christine. "I've had dogs that just did not like somebody and basically chased him out the door. I had another 140-pound dog that would sit on the couch between me and my date and just start pushing to get between us as much as possible. They've been right so far, so I'm going to listen to the dogs from now on."
Assuming we could get past the dogs -- we always carry a slice of salami in our wallet for that very purpose -- we wonder what Christine's ideal date would be. We remind her that she wrote on her Playboy questionnaire that it would involve "camping, fine wine, a fire and one sleeping bag." Now she rolls her eyes and laughs. "Well, that would be a good date if I knew the guy for a while," she says. "Otherwise you're stuck on a mountain with someone on a first date and you realize he's annoying. He would get to sleep on pinecones. That's why it usually takes me about two weeks of asking questions and getting feedback from random people who know him before I go on a date with someone."
We thought we'd turn the tables and ask Christine a few random Smith questions since this uncommon beauty has the most common name in America. How many John Smiths are in your family? "I don't think there are any! But there are hundreds of Smiths in the phone book, so there may be some I don't know about." Could you rat your hair like Robert Smith of the Cure? "I don't think I could do that myself, nor would I want to. It would take lots and lots of hair spray." In the movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which half of the couple is sexier? "Nothing against Brad Pitt, but Angelina Jolie is the hottest woman alive." What's your favorite Kevin Smith movie? "I think Chasing Amy is the only one I've seen." Would you ever buy anything from the Jaclyn Smith collection at Kmart? "Maybe in about 20 years."
Years ago a band named Smith had a hit with a song called "Baby, It's You." No doubt they had Christine in mind.

The Godfather
Raquel's World Party Globalization is a family thing for Miss November
When you have a family as large and culturally diverse as Raquel Gibson's, your passport soaks up more ink than a UN ambassador's. "My mom is Filipino, and my dad is an Italian New Yorker," she says. "I'm the baby of the family--the spoiled one--and I have five siblings from the ages of 21 to 43. I have a niece who is actually older than I am, which means I was an aunt before I was even born." Although the 20-year-old has always called Florida home, she often jets to the Philippines and Japan, where her oldest sister and her family live. "I'm fluent in Tagalog, which is a language of the Philippines, and I know a little Japanese," she says. "I want to learn Spanish, Portuguese, Italian--I have a whole list!" As she enthusiastically tosses some Tagalog at us, we can't help but notice her resemblance to another exotic beauty. "It's flattering to be told that I look like Jessica Alba," she says. "It started when Dark Angel came out. I don't watch much TV, so I said, 'Who is Dark Angel? I'm a what?' I figured it out when she became better known. My friends say I should sign autographs when people ask if I'm her, but I couldn't get into that."
Miss November had better keep that Sharpie in her purse, though, because she doesn't lack for admirers, and more are on the way. "I have a ton of guy friends," she says. "That can be a problem when I hook up with someone, because they say, 'You have a million and one guys calling you a day.' But they're just my friends." Raquel's taste in men is expansive, but she does have some firm ideas. "I've dated every single type, from the beefy macho guy to the skinny, dorky-looking guy, but I don't want to be with a partier," she says. "I like someone who's into his mom and checks in on her--not a mommy's boy but someone family-oriented." He should also like a woman who has ambition, because Raquel--who already has a culinary school degree and a real estate license--plans to go back to school to become a pediatrician someday, with a practice someplace warm. "I can't stand the cold," she says. "I can't see myself dressed like an Eskimo walking down the streets of New York, and I'd miss going to the beach and playing football."
Just don't ask Miss November to go into the water--there are too many sharks. "The news will show a helicopter flying over with 200 sharks in the water and people just swimming and playing around them. I think, Are you guys dumb? I'd much rather lay out and have a few tropical drinks. I want to enjoy my life and be happy instead of sweating something for no reason. You're going to look back and laugh, so why even worry about it?"

Open Paige There's nothing scary about it--Miss October is carving herself a ripe future
Amanda Paige of the University of Virginia is pondering the subject of her thesis with an attitude that is anything but cavalier. "I think I'm going to write mine about artificial reproductive technology and how it's changing family dynamics," says the brainy 21-year-old sociology major. "Now a couple can have a baby who has many parents. Who's really the parent--the egg donor, the person who's raising it or the person who carried it? It's really interesting." Interesting indeed, especially when these matters are being weighed by someone who can be as effervescent as Kate Hudson with puppies. But it's easy to see where Amanda gets her serious side: Her dad is a cardiologist, and her mom's a nurse. Was there ever any pressure to follow in their footsteps? "My parents never encouraged me to be a doctor, because my dad worked such crazy hours," she says. "My mom wanted me to be a nurse, but I hate hospitals and blood." But Miss October may be willing to play the part on Halloween, one of her favorite holidays. "It's a way of dressing slutty without getting in trouble," she grins, "so I dress sexier. I was a Greek goddess and a sailor girl. This year I want to wear a little Goldilocks outfit with sequins, like Britney Spears did once. Hey, you've got to get attention somehow!"
Miss October hardly has to exert herself to grab gazes, as she recently discovered on a night out in Los Angeles with Hef and his girlfriends. "It's difficult to explain to your friends," she says. "It's weird to be put on a pedestal and have people take pictures of me, because I'm just a normal person. Why would they want my picture?" (You see? Even the smartest people can have surprising gaps in their knowledge.) Amanda's hair falls over her eye and she blushes slightly when we ask if she's ever caught someone's gaze and tried to get him to cross the room. "It just happens," she says. "I prefer guys to approach me but not in a sleazy, cheesy way." With her studies and sorority commitments, how does she make time for romance? "It's not too difficult if he's experiencing the same thing. There is an understanding, so when you do see each other between classes or on the weekend, it's more intense." What would Miss October do with all that intensity if she didn't have to share a house with three roommates? "I made myself a bubble bath, with candles, a few weeks ago, and it was sensuous and romantic. It would be fun to walk into a house and discover that a guy has lit all these candles for you and has covered your bed with rose petals. But I suppose I'll have to wait until after I graduate for that." Really? Somehow we think Charlottesville is going to be teeming this fall with guys carrying roses, candles and copies of The Journal of Artificial Reproductive Technology.

Miss September 2005 Vanessa Hoelsher

NAME:
Vanessa Hoelsher
BIRTHPLACE:
Atlanta, GA
BUST:
36" D
WAIST:
25
HIPS:
36
HEIGHT:
5' 6"
WEIGHT:
120 lbs

AMBITIONS:
I want to model & promote for Playboy, further my career in wines & spirits and live a substantial life driven by purpose.
TURN-ONS:
Athletic men, confidence (not cockiness!), humility, Southern gentlemen & guys who can fix things around the house.
TURNOFFS:
Selfishness, negativity, cell phones, unpatriotic Americans and people who complain about their lives but do nothing to change them.
MY CHARITY WORK FOR ANIMALS:
Is very important to me.
OLD SOUL OR YOUNG AT HEART:
I have a very old soul.
FAVORITE OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES:
Going to football games (Go, Falcons!), going to the lake, hanging out poolside with the girls.
THE MOST ROMANTIC CITIES:
If you are with the right person, anywhere can be romantic. But Portofino, Italy and Tahiti seem pretty romantic to me.
Vintage Vanessa Miss September's future is ripe with possibilities
When the lights go out in Georgia, Vanessa Hoelsher is there to make sure you don't grow thirsty. The 23-year-old special-events coordinator is often out on the town in her home of Atlanta, promoting her company's wines and spirits. "If there's anything going on in Georgia with our liquor brands--whether it's Usher's birthday party or whatever--I'm kind of the go-to person," she says. It's not hard to understand why she gravitated to this line of work. Vanessa is direct and approachable as well as beautiful, an intoxicating Southern belle who--here's a shockeroo--lacks a Southern accent. "My family comes from Ohio, which is probably why I didn't pick up the accent," she explains. The Buckeye descendant remains tight with her family. "I have three brothers, and one of them is my twin. You'd think I would have been a tomboy, but I've always been feminine and girlie. I did get a thicker skin from having all those boys in the house. I'm not easily offended. I'm the first one to laugh at myself."
Miss September didn't have much modeling experience before sending her pictures to Playboy, but she did pose for a shock jock's billboard in Atlanta. "The ad was a satire that read MORNING DOMINATION," she says with more than a flash of naughtiness in her eye. "I wore a black leather dress and had a whip. I wasn't dealing with professional photographers, so I had to walk wrapped in a station banner past all these sales reps to do the shoot in a conference room." That didn't make her feel self conscious, nor does posing nude. Indeed, Vanessa is accustomed to being looked at. "I cannot go into a Wal-Mart without getting hit on," she says. "I'll look so bad--yoga pants, no makeup, straight from the gym--and guys will follow me around and try to talk to me." Vanessa doesn't think this is an altogether bad thing. "I'm definitely not a first-move kind of girl. I like it when a guy has the nerve to ask a girl out on a date instead of dropping a cheesy line. Still, the Wal-Mart thing weirds me out." So what is her type? "I like rugged guys. I don't like dating men prettier than I am or men who take longer to get ready than I do. I dated this football player who was metro and loved shoes and shopping--there's something going on there. My friends tease me and say, 'You just like these macho, meathead guys.' Every time some big guy walks by, they say, 'There's your new boyfriend, Vanessa.' I can't help it."
Since her job requires her to be an enthusiastic socializer, Vanessa cherishes low-key nights at home with her roommate, two cats and the latest biography. And while she's game for exciting opportunities that may come her way, she won't soon be leaving on that midnight train from Georgia. "I like Atlanta and would not drop everything to move to L.A.," she says with a smile. "I'm not going to roll the dice and just move somewhere to see what happens."

Today! Tonight! Tamara! Miss August bides her time and goes her own way
Tamara Witmer, 21 and gorgeous, is trying on hats in Ensenada, Mexico. She’s elegant in the black sombrero, puppy cute in pink. We’ve been watching her for a couple of years now, since she first returned to her native California from Columbus, Ohio, too young to have a beer in a bar. A photographer sent us pictures of her modeling swimsuits. You may wonder why it took us two years to bring this beauty to your attention. All we can say is that some things are worth waiting for.
For a while there, the soft-spoken, self-effacing Tamara thought she might like a career in entertainment. Not so much anymore, she says with a chuckle. Why is that? "Because I don’t have any talent," she says, laughing even harder. "Acting is unrealistic for me." Before we can ask how acting could be unrealistic for anyone--after all, have we not seen the films of Steven Seagal?--she elaborates. "I just live for the day," she says brightly. "I don’t have any concrete plan." And why should she? The modeling is working out just fine, and anyone lucky enough to while away an afternoon in sunny Ensenada trying on hats would surely agree. It’s a breezy kind of moment that might bring on a song. Here, we’ll give you the first line: "Tamara, Tamara, we love you, Tamara."
Later, after the tequila and the limes come out, she lets her personal side escape. She says that while she finds successful, well-educated men sexy, they’re not necessarily her ideal: "I would rather be with someone who is not hot but down-to-earth and stable." She hasn’t had lots of boyfriends; she says she’s shy. "I would like to be more outgoing," she confesses. If you feel you’d like to help Miss August burst from her cocoon, here’s a tip: She bowls. In fact she has her own ball, a sparkly pink and purple one.
She’s a beautiful woman who takes neither the world nor herself too seriously. One other point: She’s honest. "Some people want to win no matter how fake they are," she says. "I just do things in my own way." In other words, live for today, and don’t worry about Tamara.

Miss July 2005 Qiana Chase

NAME:
Qiana Chase

Los Angeles, CA

HIPS:
36
HEIGHT:
5' 9"
WEIGHT:
130 lbs

AMBITIONS:
I would love to be Playmate of the Year. I would also love to own as much property as possible.
TURN-ONS:
I like people who are sure of themselves and what they want out of life. I love ambition.
TURNOFFS:
I think one of my biggest turnoffs in people is arrogance. Arrogance is very unattractive to me.
NICKNAMES:
Q, Ki-Ki or just...Chase.
FAVORITE AUTHOR:
Maya Angelou

Swordfish, The Color Purple, Training Day, Monster and Finding Nemo
SEXIEST CD I OWN:
Destiny's Child's Destiny Fulfilled
THE TASTIEST FOOD I EVER ATE:
French fries (my favorite!).
MY EARLIEST MEMORY:
My earliest memory is of my first boyfriend in first grade kissing my cheek.
The Great Chase When Miss July faces a challenge, she usually has a leg up on her rivals
Got gams? If not, Qiana Chase has enough to share. At five-foot-nine, the statuesque native of Los Angeles learned early on that if she took care of her stems, they'd take care of her. "I've always liked my legs," she says. "One guy told me, 'Oh my God, your legs. They just go from here to heaven.' Are they that long? I don't know. Maybe I can't tell because I'm looking at them from this angle."
Qiana (pronounced key-AWN-uh) has other charms, of course. She draws people close with her warm, high-wattage smile and laid-back vibe. She picked up the nickname Q when she started modeling a few years ago. "I don't know why, but it's so hard for people to say Qiana or remember Qiana, so I'd tell them, 'It's just Q, okay?'" she says, following with a throaty laugh that erupts easily and often. She first connected at Playboy two years ago when she appeared in her first of two Special Editions. "I've been posing nude all my life," she says. "I've always been comfortable with it, which is almost scary, especially for my mom. She'll say, 'Please, put some clothes on. I beg of you.' She asked me to wait until I was 24 to become a Playmate, so today she's okay with it. Now that I'm older I'm more body conscious and aware of my angles. Modeling is a job that you have to study to see what works for you and what doesn't. There's definitely a rush being in front of the camera and having everybody make a big fuss over you."
Once she's away from the camera, though, Miss July wants fuss kept to a minimum. She plans to log a lot of quality beach time this season. "I try to stay carefree in the summertime," she says. "I'm hot, I'm loving it, I look good, I feel good." The season abounds with highlights. "Every year a friend from high school throws a huge Fourth of July weekend party that is so much fun. It's like a reunion. I'm social with everybody. I like a variety of people." When we ask her if this means her dates come in all shapes and sizes, though, she raises her eyebrow and admits that her dates tend to come in the varieties tall and extra tall. "I need to know that if I put on my highest heels, which will make me about six-five, he will be right there with me."
What does she do with eight-inch heels? As it turns out, she goes dancing--often. "I think I go out a little bit too much," she says with a grin. "My friends will ask me, 'Where do you live?' Because I'm never home. I love being in clubs, listening to the music, feeling the vibe of the people and knowing that everybody is out to have a good time."
That's just the attitude you'd expect from a girl who calls herself a free spirit. And like a free spirit, she sees a world of possibilities opening before her. "I do so many things," she says. "Modeling, makeup, working in television. The sky is the limit, and I'll do as many things as the good Lord will allow me to."

Miss June 2005 Kara Monaco

Kara Monaco
BIRTHPLACE:
Lakeland, FL
BUST:
34" C
WAIST:
24
HIPS:
34
HEIGHT:
5' 6"
WEIGHT:
110 lbs

AMBITIONS:
To become a successful model/actress.
TURN-ONS:
Intelligence, a sense of humor, someone tall, dark and handsome.
TURNOFFS:
Hairy guys! Cheaters! Jealousy and possessiveness.
PLACE I'D LIKE TO TRAVEL:
Anywhere in Europe, Japan, Hawaii, Australia & Tahiti.
FAVORITE SPORTS:
Surfing, wakeboarding, snowboarding and basketball.
WHAT I DRIVE / WISH I DROVE:
A '99 BMW 328i / Mercedes SL500.
SEXIEST SCENE IN A MOVIE:
Ethan Hawke & Gwyneth Paltrow in Great Expectations.
Princess Monaco A warm and sunny Miss June brightens the Sunshine State Since Kara Monaco appeared last August in our Women Behind Bars pictorial featuring sexy bartenders, guys wandering near her watering hole in Orlando, Florida have been unusually thirsty. "People come in every night wanting me to sign something for them," she says. "The owners loved it, and while I thought it was sweet, it got a little overwhelming." Kara, who describes herself as "a bit shy and reserved until you get to know me," found a way to deflect some of the attention. "I have a co-worker who looks enough like me that people think we're sisters," she says. "At one point, when someone came in and asked, 'Are youKara from Playboy?' I said, 'Oh no, she's right over there.' She got to play my body double. It was funny."
Such shyness, however, is seldom more than a temporary condition with Kara. Though the petite 22-year-old starts out quiet, her emerald eyes light up before long, and her friendly laugh turns into an exuberant cackle. This is especially true once you get her going about life in the Sunshine State. Tourists, she says, are easy to spot "because they're always sunburned"--a detail she first noticed while fulfilling a tour of duty working in Mickey Mouse's playground. "I dressed as seven different characters, including Cinderella, Snow White, Alice in Wonderland and the Little Mermaid," she says proudly. Kara also danced in the Disney World parades, a not unexpected distinction on a résumé that includes years of dancing and gymnastics and a stint coaching a competitive dance team. "It was a jazz-funk, hip-hop kind of thing," she says. "That's what I do best."
One thing you won't find Miss June doing much is hanging out in bars after work. "After being in that environment all day I'm done with partying," she says. "I love going to Miami, where these pictures were taken, but the city is a little crazy for my taste. I'm more of a homebody now."
A homebody but not boring. Kara never lets her relationships become routine and predictable. "Being spontaneous always helps," she says. "Surprise your significant other by making dinner or preparing a bubble bath for both of you. I try to keep things spicy." So when this bartender is finished pouring shots at work, does she then call the shots in her relationships? "I'm in charge, but I make him think he is," she says with a sly grin. "The one thing I won't tolerate is cheating. I warn guys I date that they get one chance with me, and if they cheat it's over. I've never cheated on anyone, and I want the same respect."
This summer Kara wants to learn how to wakeboard, a sport that will separate her from her constant companion, Chloe, a teacup Chihuahua she carries everywhere in a pooch purse. Their relationship is very L.A.--a city to which the aspiring actress is thinking of moving. "I've set goals, and I hope within five years I'll be doing something actingwise, whether it's a film or a TV show," she says. "I would love to do something totally opposite from myself that even downplays my looks, like Charlize Theron's role in Monster." Her five-year plan is hardly a deadline, however. "I don't think I would give up after a certain amount of time," she says. "I'll just keep trying."
Kara is one of a number of Sunshine State sweeties who have become Playmates recently, including Miss May, Jamie Westenhiser. The two girls are actually friends who met on modeling assignments prior to appearing in Playboy. Unlike Jamie, who wants to make her home in Florida, Kara has more wanderlust. "I might use some of my Playmate money to finance my trip west, after I visit somewhere I've never been before," she says. "Right now I live with my mother, who raised my sister and me all by herself. I'm trying to convince her to move with me. She's a personal hero and someone whose advice I take to heart. My mom has been very supportive. When I first asked her what she thought of my being in Playboy, she kind of gave me a push and said, 'Go for it.' I always try to."

23"
HIPS:
34"
HEIGHT:
5' 7"
WEIGHT:
112 lbs

AMBITIONS:
To have a successful career in real estate.
TURN-ONS:
Honest, secure, good-looking men with confidence, class and $$!
TURNOFFS:
LIARS, jealousy, fakes and laziness.
MY FAVORITE SPORTS TO PLAY:
Softball and tennis.
JOBS I HAVE HELD:
Smoothie maker, Hooters girl and bookkeeper.
PLANS FOR MY PLAYMATE EARNINGS:
I want to pay off all of my debt so I can start over with a clean slate.
TV SHOWS I CAN'T MISS:
Desperate Housewives, The O.C., The Oprah Winfrey Show and Newlyweds.
I'D LIKE TO BE REINCARNATED AS:
Ivanka Trump.
Girl with a View Count on a breezy Miss May to provide shelter from the storm No hurricane is going to frighten Fort Lauderdale native Jamie Westenhiser out of Spring Break City. "With hurricanes you get a warning," she says. "You prepare all the food, put up plywood and bring everything from the backyard into the house." When we ask what's in her emergency kit, the sleepy-eyed 23-year-old smiles. "Lots of candy. I have a major problem with sweets," she says. "I love to lick the bowl of whatever I bake. Disgusting, huh?" Not to us--we're pretty pro-licking here--so we ask the former Body Glove swimwear model what else she'd like to confess. "This is my going-out-of-the-modeling-business shoot," she replies. "Now I'm getting into investment-type real estate." Miss May has some history in that field. "My mom used to own a party business called the Best Little Bounce House in Town. We would blow the house up and invite the neighborhood kids over, and this made me the cool kid on the block." See? From Bounce House to your house.
Jamie says she's always been more comfortable hanging out with guys, something that's given her clear ideas about men. "I want to be in a relationship with one person," she says with an exaggerated pout. "I'm quiet and shy, so it's hard for me to meet new people. I've had only two boyfriends in my life, and they were both very persistent. It took me a good month to finally go out on a date with them. I just want to make sure somebody's serious before I get serious. I don't want to play games." Okay. Serious guys. Got it. Anything else? "I like really funny guys." Fine. Serious, really funny guys. "Who are good to their mothers." Nice to Mom--noted. Anything else? "They have to be good talkers, because I don't want to sit at dinner in an awkward silence." Is it us, or is she describing the model Playboy reader?
Note that fabulous wealth didn't make Jamie's list of attractive attributes, but Miss May isn't dogmatic about the idea. Though she first says that being forced to rely financially on someone else would be terrible, she soon allows that perhaps it wouldn't be so tragic. "I can imagine waking up in a nice house," Jamie says slyly. "I could be a trophy wife with my business on the side." So she wouldn't hold wealth against a guy if he was a seriously funny, mom-adoring conversationalist. But whatever. "My girlfriends swear that when I meet Mr. Right I'll know. I don't even know what a normal relationship is like, but I'm hopeful."
Hopeful? She's more than that. Miss May has the confidence of someone who rides out hurricanes. Says Jamie, "I like to think I usually get what I want."

A New Yorker, Naturally Miss April is a psychology student, but she prefers turning heads to shrinking them Many people will tell you that family is the key element in their life, but when Courtney Rachel Culkin says so, the lovely blonde with the dark, inquisitive eyes isn't merely mouthing a convenient cliché. Courtney lost her mother when she was 10 and was raised by her grandmother and her aunt in Shirley, New York with a houseful of cousins who were also tragically bereft. "My grandmother really helped me keep my head screwed on straight," says 22-year-old Courtney. "Her home was like a halfway house for a lot of us, and she and my aunt took care of us. I honestly feel luckier having been raised this way rather than in a traditional family. We all have each other's back. My family is the most important part of my life."
Courtney first appeared in Playboy for our 50th Anniversary Playmate Search in 2003 and is happy to be back. "I feel totally comfortable in front of the camera," she says. "I hate clothes. I really do." Since that appearance she has been pursuing a degree in psychology and is now just two semesters short of graduation. When asked to analyze her own personality, however, she manages to avoid shrinky jargon. "I'm definitely an outgoing person," she says. "I like to make jokes, even when I'm under pressure. Whenever people are unhappy--say, at a funeral--I'll try to make light of the situation. I have a joke for anything."
As apt a self-appraisal as that may be, Courtney says she's even better at analyzing another group: men. "I know their game better than they do," she says with an assured laugh. "I can figure any guy out--I don't even have to date him." Though she feels she can tell whenever masculine wheels have started spinning, Miss April has no appetite for the kind of mind games some men and women like to play.
"No, I don't like to play games," Courtney says, "but if you're going to play games with me, then I'll beat you. I'm very competitive." This tendency, she admits, affects her romantic relationships. "Oh yeah, I'm the boss," she acknowledges, "or maybe my boyfriends just let me think I am. But what I say goes. I need a lot of love and attention. It's how I was raised. My grandma always tried to compensate for our losing our parents by giving us love, love, love, love, love. That's what I'm used to."
Growing up a stone's throw from the beach has left Miss April with a deep appreciation for the life aquatic. "On weekends we always take a boat out and go riding on a Jet Ski," she says. "Then we anchor the boat, lie out, blast music and dance on the bow. Sometimes we'll look at other boats and see people staring at us through binoculars." But she also has a fondness for artistic, more landlubberly activities such as painting and photography. "I'm basically a flower child who was born in the wrong decade," she says.
Courtney knows new worlds are opening for her and more await; she hopes one day to get a doctorate in child psychology. But she's sure she has a good foundation for what lies ahead. "I'll never think I'm better than anyone," she says. "I'll always be that poor girl from Shirley. My family is my strength. There's nothing that can bring me down."

Amazing Grace With a hand from Howard Stern, Miss March's wish comes true Last year Katharine Walter, mother of beautiful 19-year-old Jillian Grace, wrote a letter to Howard Stern. She told him her daughter's dream was to be a Playboy Centerfold and asked him for an evaluation. Stern did not become America's favorite shock jock by being slow to seize opportunity. "I've got to get this broad on the phone, at least," he said. "My dream in high school was to do tons of coke, but my mom didn't go out and score for me." Stern was joking about the last part (we think), but soon Jillian and her mom had trekked from Washington, Missouri to the Stern show in New York. Almost immediately everyone in the studio--including Playboy Senior Photo Editor Kevin Kuster, who also flew in for the occasion--became enamored with Jillian's radiant smile, knockout natural body and softspoken, girl-next-door appeal. "Most women who come in here never end up in Playboy," said Stern. "They think they're hot, and they're not. Jillian looks like a Playmate to me in every sense of the word. Boom!" Hef agreed, and Stern got dubbed Deputy Editor for his scouting skills.
"Howard is my favorite comedian and one of my heroes, and I'd like to thank him for having faith in me," says Jillian, noting that when she moved from the more populous Springfield, Missouri four years ago, listening to Stern helped make her new rural surroundings more tolerable. Now she has adjusted. "Everyone in California asks me what we do in Missouri," she says. "Well, we have fun. There are a lot of open fields in the area, and we build bonfires in them. Everybody parks their trucks close together and turns on their stereos, and we have a great time. Nobody can break anything in a field."
Breaking, as in into a sweat, is something Jillian knows a lot about. She's a certified personal trainer, a career that has definitely influenced her views. "A big muscular back is my favorite part of a man's body," she says. "But looks aren't really important. Attraction is more about having fun with a guy, and kissing is a big part of having fun. That's going pretty far on a first date, though. I still have small-town-girl values, I guess."
Nothing wrong with that, particularly when the small-town girl possesses an intoxicating sweetness. Jillian even blushes when we ask about the naughty Girl Scout costume she wore to Hef's Halloween bash. "It was a green midriff shirt that tied in the front, with thigh-high stockings and a short skirt with patches sewn on," she says. "One patch had lollipops that said LICK ME underneath." She bites her lip as she mentions this detail, as if she's wondering whether she's being indiscreet. The look deepens when we ask if this playfulness translates to her real love life. Then she laughs. "It's like that song that goes, 'They want a lady in the street but a freak in bed,'" she says. "I think that plays true for everyone."
Although Jillian is considering moving to a city for a few months, she isn't likely to surrender her small-town charm. Miss March is, after all, a girl whose enthusiasm for her new Honda Del Sol ("I don't know anything about cars, but they're so cute!") is eclipsed only by her fondness for yodeling. "It started out as a joke, but I started enjoying it," she says with a laugh. "I'm on lesson five, but the sound gets too high-pitched for my speakers, so I'm kind of stuck at that stage." As she tilts back her head and starts to yodel, it becomes clear that someone with such lungs would never let success go to her head. "I'm feeling pretty grounded," she says. "I'm a Midwest girl, that's for sure."

BEST TV SHOW EVER:
Sex and the City -- I'm Samantha!
Specialty of the House When you visit Miss February, save room for dessert As one of the managers of Campisi's Restaurant, a family-run business that has been a Dallas favorite since 1946, Amber Campisi can be chauvinistic about her family's cooking. "I'll eat anything," she says, "but I don't usually like Italian anywhere else. The way we do it is just better." It's hard to argue with her, especially since she's willing to put her opinion where your mouth is. When the 23-year-old restaurateur visited our office, she hauled in enough oval Campisi's pizzas to feed the staff. "My family can't travel without them," she says. "When we go to the Cayman Islands every year, we bring lasagna and pizzas in a cooler. It's ridiculous."
Amber's affinity has been hard-earned. "There are pictures of me wearing an apron and a name tag when I was five years old," she says. "I would go to work with my dad when I was little and stay until closing time. They'd cover me with napkins, and I'd sleep in a booth." An interesting historical note about the restaurant: Jack Ruby, a friend of Amber's grandfather Joe, dined there the night before he shot Lee Harvey Oswald. This led the Warren Commission to interview the elder Campisi. "One of the stories is that Ruby came in and told my grandfather he was going to do it to spare the Kennedys the pain of a trial," she says. Whatever was said that night, Dallas now has seven Campisi's restaurants that are better known for their squisito Italian cuisine--and soon for Amber's lovely pictorial--than for any historical connections.
Miss February first appeared in PLAYBOY in December 2003 as part of our 50th Anniversary Playmate Search. Amber decided to try out when our scouts visited her hometown. "I was done with college," she says, "and I wanted to try something fun and new, so I thought, Why not? Modeling comes easily to me--I could do it all day." A self-described social creature, Amber says she could also talk all day and even all night: "Sometimes I'll start chatting with customers and lose track of the time, and I'll look up and it's two in the morning. I love it when that happens."
As for dating, Miss February appreciates the romantic, old-school approach. "I'm the type who likes dinner, wine and conversation. He doesn't have to be the cutest guy, just as long as I'm having fun and laughing." Oldschool she may be, but Amber is hardly bound by tradition. "I usually make the first move," she says. "I like guys who are hard to get. I'm all about the chase." You should definitely consider yourself hunted if Amber appears with her idea of a romantic dish: some kind of pasta, "along with a really good Italian steak with lots of garlic--which is an aphrodisiac--and some kind of dessert made with chocolate, also an aphrodisiac." And the music? Sinatra? Tony Bennett? Sorry: "I love Sade and Erykah Badu--any R&B with a slow, sexy groove."
Though Miss February's ideal Valentine's Day would involve--surprise!--good food and wine (and some fella, we assume), her most memorable came after she had broken up with her boyfriend and moved into her first apartment. "We were still friends," she says. "I told him I was lonely and that I wanted a big white fluffy cat--an annoying, girlie, prissy cat. He brought over this box, and I heard the meow and got so excited. I opened it, and there was the ugliest cat ever. She was every color but white, and she had huge ears and this giant rat tail. I just howled--it was the perfect gift. But she's a sweet kitty. I named her Bella, and now she and I are inseparable."
So there lies the secret to Amber's heart: Start with food, then move to fur.

Destiny's Calling Miss January is loving Las Vegas Destiny Davis studies economics and business law at a college less than a mile from the blinding glow of the Las Vegas Strip, but this determined 19-year-old isn't easily distracted. "I worked hard to graduate from high school when I was 16," she says. "I wanted to get a head start and do something more productive." With Sin City's demand for models constantly high, Destiny soon found herself posing at conventions and other events--and even got certified as a lifeguard to be part of a Baywatch-themed resort production. "Vegas is cool, but it's not cultural," she says. "It's a transient town. No one develops roots, and it's difficult to sustain friendships when you're always on the go. Growing up here, I never appreciated it, but I love it now. Locals know there's an entire city to explore beyond the Strip." After Destiny won first place in a bikini contest, Playmate Angela Melini, Miss June 1992, took pictures of her and whisked them off to PLAYBOY. Miss January's blend of Irish, Swedish, English and Syrian features wowed us, and her distinctive name sealed the deal. "I don't know what my mom was thinking when she named me," Destiny says. "People ask, 'Is that a stage name?'"
Unguarded and talkative, Destiny is especially open when the subject turns to men. "I love Southern accents and country music," she says, twirling her hair around a well manicured finger. "They don't grow many Southern gentlemen where I'm from, but a guy in a pair of Wranglers and a cowboy hat--that's hot! I love it when you feel sparks with someone right away. When a guy doesn't have the same energy as me, it's the worst." Asked how her date will know she's feeling sparks, Destiny smiles. "Women send subtle signs," she says. "A sexy bat of the eye, a bit of skin showing. I'm friendly, but I won't make the first move. I'm looking for Mr. Right, and I'll find him someday."
Although classes and modeling tie up most of her time, Destiny thrives on close relationships with her girlfriends. "We have girlie nights, when we drink wine and do mud masks," she says. "I play tennis anytime I can. There's usually one day every few weeks when I don't have anything to do, so I'll pig out, watch movies and chill. People always ask, 'What do you want to be when you grow up?' I say, 'Retired.' My philosophy is the harder I work now, the less I'll have to work later. I just love learning and trying to do things that make me well-rounded."
